Tajik Media Chief Gunned Down

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- Gunmen killed the head of Tajikistan's state television and radio Saturday in an attack President Imomali Rakhmonov's spokesman described on Sunday as "a terrorist act."

Presidential spokesman Zafar Saidov said the unidentified attackers had opened fire with automatic rifles on 46-year-old Saifulo Rakhimov outside his building as he arrived home from work.

They fired two coup de grace shots into his head before speeding away. Witnesses to the crime had been found and the president had taken personal charge of the case, Saidov said.

Police said Rakhimov's driver was lightly hurt. Law-enforcement agents were working at the crime scene until late at night.

Tajikistan saw civil war for much of the 1990s. A shaky peace deal has been in place for three years, but the country still suffers from rampant crime and occasional violence.
