Privatization Delay

KIEV -- Bickering in Ukraine's parliament has prompted a delay in considering the proposed privatization of the Ukrtelekom telecoms monopoly, a senior parliamentary official said Monday.

Parliament was to vote on the sell-off in a first reading last week, but the issue was withdrawn from the agenda.

"The issue was not prepared well," deputy speaker Stepan Havrysh told a news conference.

The government, under pressure to service foreign debt this year, is keen to sell 25 percent plus one share in Ukrtelekom for $548 million. But deputies have regularly blocked attempts to sell the company, which is on a list of "strategic firms" and requires a specific privatization plan.
