Pole Convicted as Spy

WARSAW, Poland -- A former military intelligence chief in the Polish army was convicted Monday of spying for Russia.

The retired officer, who had pleaded not guilty, was sentenced to four years in prison by Warsaw's Regional Military Court, which found he had caused "damage to Poland'' by passing information to the KGB between the fall of 1988 and spring 1993.

The defendant's name was not released by the court, but media reports have identified him as Czeslaw W.
