New Hormone Rules

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The European Union's executive commission said Wednesday it believed new proposals on growth hormones in cattle would bring it into line with global trade rules and it hoped the United States would lift trade sanctions.

The European Commission earlier proposed a definitive ban on one cattle growth hormone and to maintain a provisional ban on five other hormones. In 1998, a World Trade Organization panel ruled in favor of the United States and Canada in their case against the EU's ban on imports of hormone-treated beef, finding that the EU lacked scientific evidence for its ban.

The United States last year won WTO authorization to impose $117 million of sanctions on EU products in retaliation.
