Ministry Slams U.S.

MOSCOW -- The Foreign Ministry on Wednesday sharply criticized a U.S. congressional resolution condemning the loose union between Russia and Belarus as anti-democratic.

"It is strange that American lawmakers, stubbornly ignoring the obvious facts, groundlessly assert that the treaty establishing the union is supposed to undermine Belarussian independence and prospects of democracy,'' the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The U.S. resolution, passed in the House of Representatives on May 3, condemns Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko for systematically suppressing dissent, creating "an authoritarian police state, where human rights are routinely violated."
