Lycos in Merger Talks

MADRID, Spain -- Fast-growing Spanish Internet group Terra Networks said Friday it was in talks with U.S. web portal Lycos in a move that could create a new global Internet giant behind America Online and Yahoo of the United States.

"Talks are currently going with Lycos with no definitive agreement worth announcing so far and no guarantee for the time being that one can be reached," Terra said in a filing to Spain's National Securities Market Commission.

A linkup between Terra, a top-tier access and content provider that operates in the both Latin America and the Iberian peninsula, and U.S. Internet portal Lycos could create a global Internet group with a market capitalization of some $22 billion.
