Japan Mobile Profits

TOKYO -- NTT DoCoMo Inc., the world's second-largest mobile phone service provider, Wednesday reported its group net profit surged 23 percent to 252.14 billion yen ($2.35 billion) for the year to March 31, propelled by explosive sales of its web-surfing "i-mode" phones.

DoCoMo, the mobile phone unit of Japan telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp, posted an operating profit of 545.76 billion yen, up 7.3 percent from a year earlier, on sales of 3.72 trillion yen, up 19.2 percent.

DoCoMo, which has become Japan's most valuable company by market capitalization, has seen spectacular sales of its Internet service which overtook traditional Japanese Net service providers to become Japan's biggest web access platform.
