Caution on Kazakh Oil

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- The international consortium drilling for oil off Kazakhstan's Caspian shore said its efforts so far had yielded "encouraging" results, but warned it was too early to tell the world what lay beneath the sea bed.

Its cautious position differs vastly from jubilant remarks made by government officials, including Prime Minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev, who has said the project would likely yield a field several times the size of the giant Tengiz site.

A spokesman for the Offshore Kazakhstan International Operating Co. said Friday results were still unavailable.

"There won't be any announcement of results until the end of the third quarter," the spokesman said.
