Beria Review Set

MOSCOW -- The Supreme Court next week is to consider an application for the rehabilitation of Lavrenty Beria, the onetime head of Stalin's secret police, Interfax has reported.

Beria played a major role in the massive purges of the Stalin era, but the rehabilitation application filed by relatives asks that he be considered a victim of political repression himself.

Beria was arrested in June 1953, about three months after Stalin's death, amid a power struggle among aspirants to lead the country. He was found guilty of high treason and terrorist activities and executed that December.
