Belarus PM Sentenced

MINSK, Belarus -- A Belarussian court sentenced former Prime Minister and leading opposition figure Mikhail Chigir to three years in prison, suspended for two years, on Friday for abuse of power, barring him from upcoming elections.

A judge at the Minsk municipal court said Chigir, 52, had been found guilty of abuse of power as the state's prime minister in 1995.

The suspended sentence means he cannot leave the capital or take part in any election in the next two years, and a minor offense within this period would lead to imprisonment, the judge said.
