Azeri Protest Arrests

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Police in the former Soviet state of Azerbaijan detained nine members of the country's opposition Monday after they tried to hold a small protest over the arrest of other opposition figures.

Court officials said the nine were held by police and taken to court for holding an unsanctioned protest, then were freed after being fined. The picket near the prosecutor's office in central Baku was in protest of the arrest April 29 of more than 40 demonstrators who had clashed with police.

Among the detainees are former Prime Minister Panakh Huseinov, of opposition party The Peoples Party, and Arif Gadjiev, of another opposition group, Musavat.
