Azerbaijan Protests

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Several thousand opposition demonstrators on Saturday marched through the capital of ex-Soviet Azerbaijan demanding changes to the election law and free parliamentary polls later this year.

Waving banners and flags from Azerbaijan's opposition parties, the demonstrators cried "We want free elections" as riot police with metal shields and sticks lined the streets and kept the marchers from spreading out.

"They've fulfilled all our demands and there haven't been any problems with the demonstrators," said Yasha Aliyev, deputy head of the Baku police department. Police said there were more than 3,000 demonstrators.

"Today's demonstration showed that the opposition is not afraid of government pressure and we will continue to pursue our aim of free elections," said Ali Kerimov, of the opposition Popular Front.
