WORLD BEAT: Wajda Donates Oscar To Polish University

WARSAW, Poland -- On his triumphant return from Los Angeles, Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda donated his Oscar statue to the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland's oldest and most prestigious institution of higher education.

"This university is 600 years old. It will be a great honor for this statue to be kept here,'' Wajda told Polish Radio after a ceremony in front of a medieval cloth market in Krakow.

The 73-year-old filmmaker received this year's honorary Oscar in recognition for his career maneuvering between a repressive communist government and an audience yearning for freedom.
