Telecom Offer Eyed

LONDON -- France Telecom SA is preparing a possible bid for British mobile phone company Orange PLC and has hired three groups of investment banks to advise it, the Financial Times reported Wednesday.

The French state-controlled company had hired the Rothschild group, Credit Suisse First Bostonand Morgan Stanley Dean Witter as advisers, the paper said, without identifying its source.

All three banks had declined comment, the Financial Times said.

France Telecom chairman Michel Bon said last month he was interested in acquiring Orange, which was bought last October by Germany's Mannesmann AG for $32 billion but is now expected to be sold off after Vodafone AirTouch PLC's successful bid for Mannesmann.
