Sowing Season




MOSCOW -- Russia had sown 6.3 million hectares of all spring crops by April 25, or 10.8 percent of the total area to be sown, down from 9.4 million hectares on the same date last year, the Agriculture Ministry said Friday.


It said in a statement that grains and maize had been sown on 4.1 million hectares, which accounts for 11.9 percent of the total area to be sown this spring, 1.23 million hectares less than on the same date in 1999.


Sugar beet had been planted on 287,700 hectares, or 30.5 percent of the total area of 944,600 hectares, against 498,600 by April 25, 1999; and sunflower had been sown on 423,400 hectares against 1.286 million on the same date last year.
