Putin: Privatize Land

MOSCOW -- President-elect Vladimir Putin met with top legal officials and called for drafting legislation allowing private ownership of agricultural land, Itar-Tass reported.

Putin met with Constitutional Court Chairman Marat Baglai and Justice Minister Yury Chaika in the Kremlin on Tuesday.

Putin has earlier hinted at a move to privatize agricultural land, which was nationalized in the 1930s and organized into inefficient collective farms. Privatizing the land is considered a key reform and might reduce Russia's dependence on imported food.

Putin and Chaika also discussed ironing out contradictions between local laws in Russia's 81 provinces and laws passed by the federal government.
