Possible Amnesty

MOSCOW -- Lawmakers will consider approving a blanket amnesty for up to 120,000 people who have been jailed for petty offenses or who are facing trial on such charges, an official said Thursday.

The State Duma, the lower house of parliament, will consider the amnesty May 17, Pavel Krasheninnikov, chairman of the chamber's committee on legislation, told journalists.

The amnesty would cover crimes such as petty theft and public drunkenness. No figures were provided on the breakdown between people in prison and those facing trial who might be covered by the amnesty.
