Nurse Files Suit

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- A nurse has lodged a case against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights claiming she was mistreated and wrongly detained by federal forces in Chechnya, the court said Tuesday.

A statement from the court in Strasbourg, France, said it had registered the complaint lodged April 5 by nurse Sasita Khasmagometovna Khasyuva.

Court officials said it was the first complaint they had registered in connection with the military's action in Chechnya.

The court said the complaint related to events in February when a medical team and a number of wounded people were forced to evacuate a hospital in Grozny.

Khasyuva claimed medical staff and wounded were beaten during the evacuation and that she was later detained and ill-treated at Tolstoy Yurt north of Grozny, then at Chernokozovor.
