MiG Accident Kills 1

MOSCOW -- A fighter jet crashed while landing at an air base in northern Russia, killing one of the two-man crew, officials said Thursday

Just after touching down Wednesday night, the MiG-31 skidded off the runway, flipped and caught fire, said air force spokesman Alexander Drobyshevsky.

One of the plane's pilots, Major Yevgeny Stroitelev, was hospitalized and later died. The other, Colonel Gennady Mashevsky, received minor injuries.

The crash occurred at an air base in the northern town of Kotlas, located about 960 kilometers north of Moscow. Its cause wasn't immediately clear.
