Kyrgyz Intervention

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan -- A key Kyrgyz opposition figure said Thursday the personal intervention of President Askar Akayev had secured his release from jail.

Daniyar Usenov, a presidential contender, was arrested late Wednesday on charges of beating up a tourism official four years ago. He was the second opposition leader to be detained in recent weeks.

"On hearing of the court's [arrest] decision, Akayev, as guarantor of the constitution, said he would not permit the law to be violated in such a manner," Usenov told reporters.
