Azeri Confession

YEREVAN, Armenia -- Prosecutors in the ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan said Tuesday a former defense minister has confessed to an assassination attempt on the region's president.

Samvel Babayan trained a group of assassins and planned to take over as a military dictator, prosecutors said.

Babayan, whom prosecutors said was bitter after being ousted from the Defense Ministry last year, was detained shortly after the attack.

Gunmen with ties to Babayan sprayed President Arkady Gukasyan's car with automatic fire March 22, seriously wounding him in the legs, police said. The shooting took place in Stepanakert, capital of the Armenian-inhabited region.
