Armenia Case

YEREVAN, Armenia -- Members of Armenia's parliament Wednesday put off proposed impeachment proceedings against President Robert Kocharian, whom they accuse of barring a prosecutor from hearings on last October's massacre in parliament.

Andranik Markarian, leader of the Unity party, said his party had not made a decision on whether to push for impeachment. Unity holds 60 seats in the 127-seat parliament.

The impeachment discussion was sparked when Military Prosecutor Gagik Dzhangirian submitted his resignation. He said he was ordered not to appear Wednesday at a hearing into the incident in which gunmen burst into parliament and killed the speaker, the prime minister and six other top officials.

Among those killed in the Oct. 27 attack were Prime Minister Vazgen Sarkisian and parliament speaker Karen Demirchian.
