Almaty Eyes Gazprom

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- The prime minister of Kazakhstan said Friday that Belgium's Tractebel, which has lost money running a Kazakh utility and pipelines, might cease operations there and Russia's Gazprom might enter the market.

A spokesman quoted Prime Minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev as saying Tractebel was in talks with Gazprom, though he did not give details of the discussions and the Belgian firm previously has denied planning to sell out to Gazprom.

Gazprom officials in Moscow declined to comment.

Tractebel has said it might pull out of the Central Asian country.
