Schroder in Georgia

TBILISI, Georgia -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder on Thursday thanked Eduard Shevardnadze for his role in helping to reunite Germany, giving the Georgian leader a boost ahead of an April 9 presidential poll. Schroder's two-day visit is the first ever trip by the head of one of the Group of Seven leading industrial nations to the Caucasus. As Soviet foreign minister, Shevardnadze was deeply involved in negotiations that lifted Moscow's objections to letting Germany reunite. Schroder also said Berlin will give Georgia 60 million Deutsche marks ($30 million) in new aid.
