Zhirinovsky Dances to Fortune Teller's Tune

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, his poll ratings stuck in single figures, turned to a Gypsy fortune teller on Wednesday for some good news on his campaign for the March 26 presidential election.

"What does Putin think of me?" the LDPR leader asked the fortune teller, identified as Gypsy Natasha, in an encounter shown on NTV television. "Why doesn't he help me? I'm doing him no harm."

Zhirinovsky lies far behind acting President Vladimir Putin, the runaway leader, and his Communist challenger, Gennady Zyuganov.

"You have many enemies," the fortune teller told him. "You strive not for money but justice. People do not understand you."

Zhirinovsky, who is notorious for flamboyant acts before television cameras, was shown dancing alongside young Gypsy women in flowing skirts and downing and smashing a glass of vodka. Zhirinovsky confided that he was "irritated" by Putin, who was younger than him, and by former President Boris Yeltsin, who was taller.

NTV said the fortune teller offered a "diplomatic" reply to Zhirinovsky by suggesting the election would be won by someone with the initials V.V. - both Putin and Zhirinovsky share V.V. as the initials for their first name and patronymic.
