Ukraine Cuts State Jobs

KIEV -- Ukraine's government is planning to carry out significant cuts in the number of civil servants after ordering the slashing of personnel at ministries and other state institutions, a top official said Wednesday.

The planned cuts could affect as many as 300,000 people, First Deputy Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov told a seminar for Ukrainian journalists. He declined to say what percentage of civil servants the figure represented.

Last week, the Cabinet ordered the staff of various ministries and government departments be cut by some 20,500 people.
