St. Pete Tax Officer To Shift to Capital

Another St. Petersburg official has followed President-elect Vladimir Putin to the capital.

Federal tax police director Vyacheslav Soltaganov has tapped St. Petersburg tax police deputy chief Alexei Sedov to head the agency's Moscow office.

Soltaganov introduced Sedov to Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov on Monday. Both Sedov and his predecessor, Boris Dobrushkin, have been with the tax police since the agency's inception in December 1992.

The links between Sedov's career and that of Putin may well have contributed to his appointment. Sedov served in the KGB before moving to the tax police.

Sedov's appointment is consistent with recent Putin statements that key posts in agencies involved in the fight against corruption will be filled with proven people from security organs.

News of Sedov's appointment drew mixed reactions from his colleagues at the agency's St. Petersburg and Moscow offices. "We're sad to lose such a qualified specialist," a St. Petersburg tax police representative said.
