Shares Close Lower

MOSCOW -- Shares closed lower Monday for the first time in nearly two weeks as clients took profits and traders said the negative mood of world markets could push prices even lower in the near future.

The dollar-denominated Moscow Times Index of 50 leading shares fell 5.94 percent to 165.21 on turnover of $40.822 million.

The benchmark RTS1-Interfax shares index closed down 6.74 percent at 209.67 on steady volume of $38.6 million. The broader Reuters Russian Composite was 7.14 percent lower at 1,664.03.

"There is a high likelihood that tomorrow we will see prices significantly lower than today's due to American markets," said Andrei Kukk, head of share trading at NIKoil.
