Reactors in Bad Health

MOSCOW -- Thirty of the country's 112 research nuclear reactors are too old and rundown to operate safely, the chief of the nuclear safety watchdog agency said Tuesday.

Yury Vishnevsky, State Nuclear Safety Oversight Committee head, said 30 nuclear reactors used for research have served at least 30 years and could easily malfunction, Interfax reported.

"Practically no money is available for maintaining the research reactors. Personnel are leaving the research centers and nuclear waste is not being reprocessed,'' Interfax quoted Vishnevsky as saying during an official meeting.
