Moldova's Gas Restored

MOSCOW -- Natural-gas monopoly Gazprom on Thursday said it would restore gas supplies to Moldova, which had been cut off three days earlier due to unpaid bills.

The cutoff, the second since December, threw Moldova into a crisis. Hospitals canceled all routine operations and Moldovans resorted to heating food on clothing irons and cooking meals over outdoor fires in their yards. Most Moldovans rely on Russian gas as their primary energy source for cooking and heating.

Igor Ivantsev, a Gazprom spokesman in Moscow, said that after two days of negotiations with Moldovan officials, an agreement was reached under which the gas would be turned on in the evening. Moldova agreed to pay its debt for January and February by March 16, he said.
