Golden ADA Trial

MOSCOW -- Court hearings began Monday in the case of Andrei Kozlyonok, charged with embezzling more than $183 million in gold, diamonds and silver from Russia.

Kozlyonok, arrested in Greece and extradited to Russia in 1998, is accused of making a fake contract with the State Committee on Metals and Gems on behalf of the Golden ADA company, which he co-founded.

Kozlyonok's co-defendant in the case, Yevgeny Bychkov, said Monday he was not guilty of smuggling, embezzlement and other crimes in the scheme.

Bychkov, former head of the State Committee on Metals and Gems, said the charges were politically motivated.
