EU Names Kohler

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- European Union nations gave unanimous backing Monday to Horst Kohler, the candidate Germany picked to head the International Monetary Fund after the United States rejected Berlin's first choice.

"There was a consensus among all the European finance ministers for the German candidate, and I hope it will be endorsed also by other countries outside Europe," Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres announced in Berlin after meeting German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder.

Portugal currently holds the EU's rotating presidency and had lobbied to secure support for Kohler at the meeting of EU finance ministers in Brussels, Belgium.
