Browning Shuns Deal

MORGAN, Utah -- Firearms manufacturer Browning, distributor of the Winchester brand rifle, announced Monday it would not join competitor Smith & Wesson in a deal with the U.S. government.

"They're asking the companies to exercise regulatory authority," said Rich Bauter, vice president for Browning firearms marketing.

On March 17, Smith & Wesson, the world's largest manufacturer of handguns, shocked guns-rights advocates by announcing it would sign an agreement with the U.S. government to install child trigger locks and develop so-called smart-gun technology.
