Babitsky Urges Charges

MOSCOW -- Radio Liberty journalist Andrei Babitsky has filed a complaint with the Chief Military Prosecutor's Office against Deputy Interior Minister Ivan Golubev, who he said was responsible for his exchange in Chechnya last month, Interfax reported Wednesday.

Babitsky said the Feb. 3 swap, in which he was handed over to masked men said to be Chechen rebels in exchange for captured Russian soldiers, was "an imitation." He said that since Golubev publicly took responsibility for the exchange, he should be charged with kidnapping, abuse of his post and violent deprivation of freedom.

Babitsky told Interfax he also planned to demand the return of videotapes made in Chechnya and his documents, including his driver's license, which were confiscated from him when he was detained outside of Grozny.
