Winter Sowing Rises

MOSCOW -- Russia's total winter grain output in 2000 is tentatively forecast at this early stage at 23 million to 24 million metric tons, of which winter wheat is expected to account for some 17 million tons, according to independent research organization SovEcon Ltd.

An estimate of the area sown to winter crops for the 2000 harvest has been slightly revised upward to 13.95 million hectares, or 6 percent up on last year.

This means the downward trend in winter plantings seen during the 1990s has stopped.
