Sugar Imports Probed

MOSCOW -- Russia has opened an investigation into sugar imports ahead of the introduction of measures to protect domestic producers against excessive imports of raw sugar, the Trade Ministry said Tuesday.

"The date of setting a special duty on raw sugar imports, the period for which it will be in effect and the rate at which it will be levied will be defined by a separate government resolution," the ministry said in a statement.

But the statement did not say when that might appear.

Last month, a ministry spokesman said Russia planned to set an extra 10 percent duty on raw sugar on top of the current 5 percent for a period of six months from the date of publication of a government resolution.
