Servicemen Sentenced

MOSCOW -- Nine Russian servicemen and civilians were sentenced to prison terms over a series of shootings that left four army and police officers dead, a news report said Wednesday.

The bloody trail began on May 12, 1998, when four soldiers stationed in the Mys Shmidta village on the Chukotka Peninsula shot and killed their commander, seized a vehicle and escaped with some 100 firearms including a grenade launcher and three machine guns.

Captured the next day, they were placed in the local detention ward, Itar-Tass said. But three of the soldiers and several civilians escaped on July 31, 1998, beating one warden to death and shooting another police officer, the report said. They were captured the next day after a shootout.
