Russian Ship to Gulf

KIEV -- Russia was dispatching a military intelligence ship from its Black Sea Fleet on Wednesday to the Mediterranean Sea and later to the Gulf to monitor the situation there, a spokesman said.

"Our ship Kildin is being sent to the Mediterranean Sea ... and will monitor the situation there for the leadership of the Russian navy and for the whole armed forces," Andrei Grachov said by telephone from the fleet's base in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol, on the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula.

Grachov dismissed suggestions the Kildin's trip could be linked to the United States' recent detention of a Russian merchant ship in the Gulf or to tension between NATO and Moscow over Russia's campaign in Chechnya.
