Nil Deficit for Ukraine

KIEV -- Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yushchenko said Tuesday the government would insist on a zero-deficit state budget for 2000 because Ukraine had no sources from which to finance a deficit.

"The key question in 2000 for us is a zero-deficit budget," Yushchenko said at a meeting with tax authorities.

"Nobody is going to provide us with corporate borrowing. We cannot sell government securities on the local market, as we do not have any buyers," he said.
