Kazakhs Lift Ban

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Kazakhstan has lifted its ban on launches of Russia's Proton rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, clearing the way for a Saturday mission, a senior space official said Monday.

"The Proton ban was lifted over the weekend after a meeting of a special government commission," said Nurlan Utembayev, deputy head of Kazakhstan's National Space Committee.

Kazakhstan suspended Proton flights last October after a Proton-K booster crashed to earth, scattering debris over its remote, barren steppe.
