Japan Expects Growth

TOKYO -- A day after a top official all but admitted the world's second largest economy is slipping back into temporary recession analysts said Monday that Japan might still hit its modest fiscal-year growth target.

In a television appearance Sunday, the country's chief economic planner acknowledged that he expects to see a "considerably large negative figure" when gross domestic product for the October-December quarter is announced early next month.

But Taichi Sakaiya added he was confident Japan will achieve the 0.6 percent growth the government is forecasting for the fiscal year ending March 31.
