Ingushetia Checks

SLEPTSOVSKAYA, Southern Russia -- Ingush riot police entered homes searching for Chechen rebels, people without proper registration papers, weapons and drugs Thursday.

Earlier this week, state institutions, including schools, colleges and administrative offices, received orders to tighten their security, and banyas were ordered to close for a month. Police began checking homes and stopping cars at almost every crossing Thursday.

Hotel Assa, the only hotel in the capital, Nazran, has closed its doors to people of so-called Caucasian nationalities.

An OMON captain, who did not want to be identified, said, "Yes, we have the order to make searches and we enter every home. The danger of terrorism is very high here in the vicinity of the border with Chechnya."
