IMF Candidate Pushed

MUNICH, Germany -- Germany's candidate to become the next head of the International Monetary Fund, Caio Koch-Weser, remains the only viable candidate to head the global lender, a senior German government official said.

The official said that, with outgoing IMF chief Michel Camdessus due to step down this month, the need was growing for Europe to unite behind a candidate for a post which for the fund's entire history been held by a European.

"We are not quite there yet. It is not a done deal," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
