Estonian Sales Fall

TALLINN, Estonia -- Estonian industrial sales fell 8.7 percent, month-on-month, in January but the underlying upward trend from late last year continued as sales were 12.8 percent higher year-on-year, the statistics office said Tuesday.

In December, industrial sales were up 7.5 percent year-on-year - the highest annual rise of 1999 - but dipped 0.3 percent month-on-month.

Estonia's overall economy, which plunged into a long recession after a key export market, was effectively closed in the wake of Russia's August 1998 financial collapse after Moscow devalued the ruble.
