Copper Firm Plans

YEKATERINBURG, Ural Mountains -- Copper producer Uralelectromed plans to raise its refined copper output this year to 280,000 metric tons from 271,000 tons produced in 1999, the plant's general director said Monday.

Andrei Kozitsyn said this year Uralelectromed would also start work on building a new $100 million copper electrolysis plant with a capacity of 300,000 tons per year, expected to take 2 1/2 years before completion of the first phase.

Uralelectromed has signed a deal with Finnish Outokumpu to produce a blueprint for the new electrolysis plant and on technology for production of refined copper, Kozitsyn said.
