Convoys Push South

DUBA-YURT, Chechnya -- Warplanes bombarded the icy slopes of Chechnya's southern mountains Friday, and convoys of troops poured into the foothills to root out militants suspected of ambushing Russian forces.

Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov announced his forces are launching a guerrilla war throughout Chechnya, NTV television reported Friday. Military spokesman Colonel General Valery Manilov dismissed Maskhadov's announcement as a "bluff,'' saying the rebels do not have the resources to wage a guerrilla war.

Interior Ministry troops Friday were strengthening their hold on strategic heights near Duba-Yurt.
