Call to Sanction Britain

WASHINGTON -- Representative Bud Shuster is urging the U.S. Transportation Department to take retaliatory measures against Britain for its failure to allow U.S. airlines to offer more flights to London.

Shuster, a Republican from Pennsylvania and chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, on Thursday asked Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater to put more pressure on Britain to renegotiate a treaty that would mean more flights for American air carriers.

Negotiations between the countries broke down last week. Shuster and the committee's ranking Democrat, James Oberstar of Minnesota, suggested that Slater consider such steps as withdrawing landing rights for the Concorde and revoking "slots" allotted to British carriers at American airports.
