This city's club-going public is terribly selective — and terribly fickle. Clubgoers don't want to be bothered with problems with service, staff attitude or face control. And if any of these arise, it's safe to assume patrons will find themselves a new haunt, never to return to the old. Witness, for example, the case of Circus: Wildly popular yesterday, the club is today putting its furniture up for sale. Thanks to rampant snobbism and a 1,000-ruble entrance fee, this big top may soon take down its tent for good.

The very new Bridge, too, is suffering: At the Kuznetsky Most club, bored, model-caliber blondes stand around, abandoned by the black-clad men who used to woo them with overpriced cocktails. Gallery is just getting by, but the number of cars parked outside its entrance grows smaller every week. And, throughout all these developments, clubgoers sleep peacefully on Friday nights, assured in the belief that they're not missing anything — because nothing is going on in the city.

Nothing? Well, perhaps not quite. Zeppelin plans to shake things up a bit this week with a pre-New Year performance by Amsterdam's DJ Jean. Jean is a resident of Amsterdam's iT club, considered by many to be the hottest club in the Netherlands on Friday nights. People come from all over the country and even from abroad to see Jean at work and — for homebound fans — iT regularly releases Friday Night Compilations on CD. Recordings of Jean's weekly show on Holland Radio "Van Diepen's Dance Department" are also released once a year on CD and are among the best selling CDs in Holland. Because Jean plays many different kinds of music, he prefers not to be associated with any particular style: a DJ Jean set, indeed, might include anything from funky groove to hard house to trance. His performance of his international hit "The Launch" at the summer party at Ibiza last year elevated the DJ to near legend status.

DJ Jean takes the stage at 11 p.m. on Saturday at Zeppelin, located at 3 Prospekt Mira, enter from Ulitsa Gilyarovskogo. Metro Prospekt Mira. Tel. 207-4590. Credit cards: V, MC, DC.
