Tajikistan Cotton Harvest

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan - Tajikistan will harvest 340,000 tonnes of raw cotton this year, well below the 600,000 tonne target, an Agriculture Ministry official said Wednesday.

"I think we shall only be able to collect 340,000 tonnes of raw cotton this year," the official told Reuters.

He said that since the start of harvesting, which was drawing to a close, the Central Asian state had collected 335,677 tonnes.

It harvested 316,300 tonnes of cotton in 1999.

The official said the main factors behind the shortfall were drought and a lack of funds for harvesting. Dry weather damaged 5,000 hectares of the 242,000 sown to cotton.

Tajikistan, which produced 850,000-900,000 tonnes of cotton in Soviet times, exports almost all its output. The country has exported 65,900 tonnes of cotton fibre this year compared with 92,200 tonnes in the whole of last year.
