Oil-rich Kazakhstan Provinces Get New Governors

ALMATY, Kazakhstan - Former Kazakh education minister Krymbek Kusherbayev has been appointed governor of oil-rich Western Kazakhstan province, home to the Karachaganak condensate site, a decree printed in the official press said Wednesday.

The area is one of the three oil-rich provinces of Kazakhstan, which together account for most of its crude production and contain some of the country's largest foreign investment projects.

Karachaganak is worked by a consortium led by BG plc and Agip , while the neighbouring Atyrau province is home to the Tengizchevroil field involving among others Chevron and Exxon Mobil.

Earlier this week, Environment and Natural Resources Minister Serikbek Daukeyev was appointed governor of Atyrau.

In summer this year, the OKIOC international consortium said that the Caspian shelf off Atyrau could contain some of the world's largest reserves of offshore crude.
